“Pope, the Floor Is Not a Hamper.”* (Edited)

2005 April 19
by WordNerd

I was going to post a really long entry (since I’ve been a bad blogger and have not really updated since my Friday freak out), but they’re about to name the new pope!  I must watch CNN and neglect this blog, my work and going to Kohl’s to pick up some new, needed exercise clothes.

Edited to add:  Joseph Ratzinger is the new Pope – Pope Benedict XVI

*Family Guy quote.  The Family Guy Pope’s reaction?  "Aw, man!" as he readies himself for the day.  By the way, before anyone gets offended, the Family Guy pope bears no resemblance to John Paul II.

Heh, Benedict. I like that. Who chooses the name, and how?

Anyhoo, the conclave didn’t last too long, did it? I was hoping for a less predictable outcome. I’ll look Ratzinger up to see what his track record is like.

The new pope chooses the name; I don’t think there’s any special process to it. They’re just asked what name they’ll take once they accept the position.

I was surprised that the conclave didn’t last longer; then again, I wasn’t. When it happened so early, I suspected that Ratzinger had been elected. It seemed to me that it was like staying the course for now (he was close to JP II) – and, not to sound crude or anything (just factual), this probably won’t be a 26-year reign, so the next election will be responsible for carrying the Catholic Church to new stages (if there are any).

Ratzinger’s a conservative, a hard line conservative. Then again, who isn’t when it comes to the Catholic Church?

I told my friend K I’d been hoping for the cardinal from Honduras (Rodriguez); that he seemed personable *and* he played the sax! She was like, “That would’ve been so cool! He could’ve had a Bill Clinton-like papacy!”

Yeah, can’t say I’m too pleased with whom they chose as Pope. A sax-playing Pope would have been so much cooler. Next conclave, maybe? I don’t want to sound crude either, but it can’t be too far into the future.

I’m neither pleased nor displeased; it was a moment in history to me, but nothing that really affects my life. I might’ve been raised Catholic, but damned if I’m going to follow it to the letter. Remember, we’re the women who think God makes fun of Jesus the way Dad makes fun of us. ;)
