Viva Mexico

Happy Independence Day!  On this day in 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla called on Mexicans to fight for their independence from Spain (okay, so it might’ve been the 15th–no one’s ever been clear on that, but it also lets us start celebrating at 11pm on the 15th all through today).  In 1821, we finally got it.  Later in the century, we’d be invaded by the Americans and by the French (so when people say, oh, the Mexican troops are helping in the Gulf–this is the first time since 1846 that Mexican troops have been on U.S soil–correction, dears, the U.S. invaded Texas, which was Mexican soil, so this is the first time our troops have been on our stolen and conquered soil since 1846.  DUH.  And by the way, both the Americans and the French entered Mexico through Veracruz, which is a definite incursion even if you’re awesomely stubborn and refuse to acknowledge the U.S. stealing half of Mexico’s territory–yes, stolen, including the so-called "Gadsden Purchase."  But I digress.).  In the early 20th century, we’d fight a bloody revolutionary war led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata.

No offense, but just thinking about all my history lessons in Mexico–man, does Mexican history kick U.S. history’s young ass.  It just seems more alive.  Maybe it’s the Puritan stodginess inherent in American history that makes me go to sleep.
