I Paved the Way
To my beloved siblings:
Always remember that I paved the way for your exploits. Always remember that I endured bitter silent treatments, horrible yelling, and accusations of less-than-virtuous behavior for your freedoms. Always remember that if it weren’t for my determination to claim responsiblity for the consequences of my actions, you’d be stuck at home, afraid to do anything because of what kind of recriminations you might face. Always remember that it was WordNerd, and not you, who challenged the boundaries of our Mexican household, who stood up to the notion that children, no matter what their age, must always do what their parents tell them to. Always remember that I kicked the idea of the perfect Mexican child to the curb, and proved I could be a wonderful person and loving child even if our parents didn’t always agree with my reasons or motivations for doing something. Always remember that I made it easier for you. Whether it’s not coming home until the next morning (something I still couldn’t get away with since I don’t have a penis) or going on a road trip to Boston, it was brought to you by the courage of WordNerd. I threw the virgin-whore dichotomy out the window for this family, and in the process made it easier for you to deal with Mom and Dad.
Remember, I’m not saying this out of bitterness or snobbiness or rubbing-your-noses-in-it-ness. I’m saying it because it’s true, and because I’m very glad you won’t have to go through the difficult times I went through. Very glad.
Now get on your knees and thank the goddess who is your sister.
