Somewhat Sickly

I hope the sickliness goes away relatively soon; I really don’t need this.

Yesterday afternoon, I started feeling a tickle in my throat, which I ignored.  Seriously, for a little while, I thought a carrot had gone down the wrong tube, so I labored mightily to dislodge it.  However, waking up at 3AM with a sore throat pretty much convinced me that I was somewhat sick, but I was luckily able to fall back asleep.  I’ve taken Advil Cold & Sinus as precautions, but I have to admit I’m feeling a bit sick right now.  Ugh.  Not what I need, given how busy I’m going to be at work for the next, um, two months.  However, I have been attacking it with fluids and medicine, so I hope whatever I have  goes away quickly.  In two and a half weeks, IP and I are going to Michigan to visit family and friends, and I really hope to be healthy at the time.

I’m a mess, though, lately.  In addition to catching something, I also did a spectacular job of somehow twisting my ankle on Friday night or Saturday morning.  I’ve stayed off of it in terms of running (which had been going relatively well), but a quick dash to catch the Metro has made me regret not waiting for the next train.  I ran for all of 20 seconds, maybe, and I’m hurting right now.  I’ve never had a sprain pain me so badly.  I’m buying something to stabilize my ankle tomorrow, but dear Lord, how old am I feeling right now?

However, thanks to IP’s wonderful birthday gift, I will soon have access to so much more than the outdoors.  His gift was, get this, a membership to his gym.  Suh-wheet!   I think the time has come to seriously cross-train.  I absolutely still love running, of course, and plan to keep it up, but being able to use the elliptical, the bike, take a few classes (included in the membership), or maybe even lift weights is a little more exciting right now than running.  IP and I will have our workout dates to combat our dinner dates. ;)

I realize I haven’t reported what I got for my birthday, so I’ll continue it here:

  • A $100 gift certificate to Target from Mom & Dad
  • A $50 check from Mom and Dad
  • A $15 gift certificate to iTunes from Dorkus
  • A cocktail shaker from Dorkus

Older Brother A tells me he’ll buy me something when I’m in town again, so I suppose the birthday gifts aren’t over yet.  I have to admit that I was mildly surprised that so many of my friends came out of the woodwork to wish me a happy birthday.  Another friend was kind enough to give me a very beautiful vase–she intended it to go with my decor.  It really doesn’t (the shade of red is too bright to go with my deep red couches and dining chairs), but it’ll go on my coffee-table-to-be anyhow.  Last but not least, my co-workers were quite cute with my birthday–they gave me flowers, sang to me during a meeting, and never let me forget for a second that it was my birthday.  I had fun on May 25.

Life’s been very busy, overall.  Work has been mega-busy.  I am very much looking forward to chilling out with my family and trading sarcastic barbs with them in late June.  IP and I will then enjoy Dominick’s until they kick us out at 10PM.  So, slight sickness and injury aside, there’s something to look forward to.  Watch out, Ann Arbor: We’re coming ba-ack!

*elderly lady from “The Simpsons” voice* Can I come too?

To Dorkus: Unlike the eldery lady, yes, you can come. I won’t be rolling up my window on you.

To IP: Oh, please, you can’t even take two pitchers at Banana Cafe . . . ;)

Yeah, I don’t know what happened with that. Maybe I’m losing my tolerance in my old age. Or maybe that sangria was like the “Date Rape Maker’s Mark” served at a certain seminar to a certain unlucky research scientist we both know and love a few years ago?

(Remember that? I still have no idea what that was all about. But be careful or we’ll hear the story again.)

Actually? I’ve never heard the story!

I thought you were going to come back with, “Well, yeah? Guess who didn’t twist his ankle Friday night?”

Really, you’ve never heard the story? Hmmm, I’ll run the broad outlines of it by you later and make sure. I thought you must have. I don’t think you heard it from the primary source. But maybe it was one of those stories I didn’t convey because it was so wacky and I didn’t quite believe it myself (still don’t). And I mean literally didn’t believe it, not “wow! I don’t believe it!”.

Anyway, I’ll probably be fairly responsible when we go to D’s, anyway. We’re only in MI for a short time, and I don’t want to spend half of it feeling like crap.

Yeah, run it by me later, because I don’t think I’ve heard a story involving Marker’s Mark from our beloved Crab.

I’ll be responsible, too. What I really just want is to sit outside, talk to whoever wants to talk to me (Sister Dorkus! Friend L! Maybe others!). I’ll have a little bit of sangria and a tiny bit of Constant Buzz.
