From the Good Times

My favorite picture of IP and me is from three years ago, when my high school friend B got married. We are positively grinning into the camera, and in front of us are six empty cups with the words “Miller Lite” inscribed on them, along with an empty pitcher of beer sitting right in front of us. Part of why it’s so hilarious is because there exist pictures of the other two couples at the table. In both pictures, the couples are close together, but they are nearly frowning into the camera, half-smiles on their uneager faces. In contrast, IP and I are wearing what can only be classified as shit-eating grins: grins because we know, know, that this day is yielding a boatload of material to make us laugh later on. I remember being horribly grouchy on that day thanks to a cold and the idea of a race the next morning (a 5K). I remember IP being fascinated by the Ritual That Is the Michigan Wedding™, what with its Baptist fear-mongering ceremonies and receptions held in the local VFW or UAW halls. As a former event planner at that point, and a current one at this point, I cringe at the idea. My wedding is going to take place entirely in the Michigan Theater, damnit!

Anyway.

I think the picture sums us up perfectly, but only we know it. We’re both grouchy smart-asses who use the world around us as fodder for fun. We laugh, we drink (though not too hard, family), we make merry when we can. And through it all, we end up with shit-eating grins on our faces, taking the tumbles but lapping it up for later on when we need to make each other laugh.

Here’s to hell-fire, not enough beer, and being raped on the pop, hon.
