A Day Off, Whee!

I woke up at 3:13am for no particular reason.  Rather than close my eyes and drift back to sleep as I usually do, I instead listened to the voices in my head urging me to go take a look out the window to see what the world was like at 3am.  I did so, careful to wrap myself in my robe before going near the window in order to stay warm.

So what was the world like at 3am?  Very similar to 5am, actually, but without the noise of the Metro and with fewer cars cruising up and down 16th Street.  I watched the street below for a while, ready to count how many souls were out and about at such a late (early?) hour, but none appeared.  I then retreated to my bed, where I surfed for approximately an hour.  No rush to get back to sleep on my part–I simply let whatever had woken me up ebb away, then turned off the light when I felt sleep creeping back to me.

This morning (later on, obviously) was delightful–a sleep in on a Monday, an early run on a Monday, a sunny day with perfect temperatures on a Monday.  Let’s all praise federal holidays!  My building, unfortunately, chose today to do water maintenance on the building, pissing some people off.  The maintenance I can understand, but scheduling it for a federal holiday in the nation’s capital wasn’t the smartest thing in the world.  Someone left a message beneath one of the signs that read “It really did cause a lot of incovenience!”  I half-snorted.  Sure, I have laundry to do, but the signs have been up there for a week.   On every floor.  Whoever this person was, what an ass.  I don’t begrudge the maintenance crew here the time they need to do their jobs–scheduled maintenance is scheduled maintenance, right?  Needs to be done if you want everything up and running correctly.

While heading to the gym this morning, I was lucky enough to witness (again) how slammed the local deli gets on a holiday.  Both front and back parking lots were jammed.  I at first thought that I was not going to get a treadmill (nooooo!), but soon saw that the deli was receiving the brunt of the wave, not the gym.  I had planned on indulging in some pancakes or French toast this weekend, but decided against it once I saw row upon shiny row of Humvees.  Let the capital young’uns have their deli, I’d settle for some waffles at home.

Sigh.  Gotta love the lazy days off.  When’s the next one?
