Dear Mexico City
. . . I love you. Thank you for finally doing what’s right by women in your city and legalizing abortion in the first trimester. It is not a step backwards for democracy—it is a step forward in democracy, recognizing that women are capable of making the necessary decisions regarding their body and the stress it could or couldn’t endure, their desire to parent or not, their ability to parent or not. Women in Mexico City are not property of the government or of men or of the Catholic Church—they are their own people, and therefore have the right to make medically sound decisions with their doctors, without fear of death from a botched abortion or fear of criminalization. Okay, have to admit, not thrilled about that under-18 consent clause—let’s work on that, shall we? Along with the whole jail time after the 12-week mark, okay? However, you’re breaking away from the patriarchy and the Church and I love you for it. Finally! Voices of reason in Mexico’s capital.
Yay for you, Distrito Federal. First recognizing gay civil unions (move onto marriage now, batos!), then this. Love you for recognizing that ¡el mundo gira y el tiempo cambia!
Today I am really, really singing “Mexico lindo y querido” quite proudly.
