A Salute to a Well-Played Weekend
At 5:30pm on Friday afternoon, when Metro was going to make us wait in hot, stuffy and smelly Metro Center for at least half an hour in order for us to board a Red line train homeward bound, I turned to IP, cranky, and said:
“Let’s just forget this crap and the gym; let’s go to Gordon Biersch and drink ourselves stupid until this blows over.”
After a bit of an internal struggle by both of us (as there always is when skipping the gym), we headed towards the exit and made our way to Gordon Biersch. Once seated, we each ordered what I believe was the Sommerfest seasonal beer, a pizza apiece, and proceeded to whittle away a few hours more than we needed to while waiting for Metro to clear up. All told, we did damage to eight beers (four each) and a pizza and a half, all the while talking about everything from Metro’s slowness last week to our potential kids. IP got to see the Stages of Drunken WordNerd, which usually culminate with “I Don’t Feel So Good . . . SNORE WordNerd”, but I was kind enough to switch it up this time and keep him on his toes. Let’s just say Priscilla Ramos wouldn’t have been happy with me on Friday night, lamenting the fact that I didn’t have a quinceañera accompanied by Church-chastity vows.
It had been a long while since I’d had any significant amount of alcohol; my food and alcohol intake has diminished in the past few months, which has helped me drop 14 pounds (and counting). As I mentioned on Friday afternoon, I was ill-tempered that day; I needed some kind of activity out of the ordinary, and while I hadn’t anticipated skipping the gym, I’m very glad that we did that day. Not only did it improve my mood, but IP and I got to have time to talk and unwind without having to keep to a schedule. While schedules and routines are good things, they are meant to be thrown out the window at times. The four beers (I feel like Pearl) didn’t affect me the next day, either: we recouped on Saturday and Sunday, and will continue with Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday’s gym outing, alas, is lost to the ages since we have to get ready for our Michigan trip.
After a day of errands on Saturday and a dinner at Matamoros in Wheaton (so disappointed; I think they changed up their traditional recipes to make them more appealing to the American palate), we spent the majority of Sunday either working on personal projects or reading ::cough::HarryPotterandtheDeathlyHallowsagain::cough::. At one point, when the thunderstorms started in earnest on Sunday, IP and I settled into a quiet reading session, side-by-side on his couch, waiting for the storm to calm down a bit before we headed to the gym. Even though laziness was trying to get the better of us (after all, what’s a rainy Sunday for if not laziness?), we headed to the gym and pumped out some weight and cardio workouts.
The next few weekends will be spent outside of DC for the most part; as I mentioned, we’ll be heading to Michigan for a wedding this weekend, and then we’ll be jetting off to Oregon for our yearly road trip the next. We return the weekend after that, with Sunday to spare as a rest day before we throw ourselves into work once again. This weekend, especially when taking into consideration the weekends to come, was well-played.

Delayed response, but I agree. Friday would have been my second night in a row stuck at Metro Center for 30+ minutes, and I was very happy to escape. We still both did all of our weights and cardio for the week. And Sunday was great – almost like a winter’s day (which I, who am always totally overheated in the DC summer, miss) with the rain outside and us sitting on the couch reading our books. It’s nice sometimes to take a break, however short, from the hectic pace of life. Maybe when we get back from our trips we’ll want another one like it.
I think we will need some down time, and the ideas we talked about last night (a relaxing nearby trip away, another quiet weekend, etc.) are ones we should probably look into.
I forgot the cutest part of this past weekend, though: When we were walking to your place and that little blonde girl shouted “Daddy!” when she saw you. That was too cute. :)
