Quick Cup Observations and Musings

Forgive the Red Wings-centric posts of the last few days. I will eventually get back to examining life in the D.C. area, but for now, I am obligated as a Red Wings fan (since 1989!) to celebrate for a few more days.

Am I the only Michigander living outside of Michigan who is getting sick of the “Detroit celebrates peacefully” articles? I mean, the Wings have won four Stanley Cups in 11 years; the Pistons won a championship somewhere in that timeframe; the Tigers got close to one a few years ago. Never once did the city or the surrounding environment explode. Yes, 1984 sucked, but it hasn’t happened in 24 years. Note to reporters: we are not East Lansing, whose citizenry thinks that setting couches aflame is something to do on a boring Saturday night; forget what they do after any kind of championship (or a near miss). Detroit has a history, no doubt, but the articles this time around were old 30 minutes after the Cup presentation.

Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie!

My work computer has now been branded with a Red Wings group picture, proudly on display whenever I minimize all windows or lock my computer. Looking at the picture, there’s about a 50-50 split in terms of recognition for me; the team has changed over time and, not having a TV, I haven’t been able to keep up with it as well as I otherwise would have. Looking at the team and personnel, you have to admit that Detroit’s chances were fantastic from the get-go given the talent and brainpower located in that picture. And Steve Yzerman isn’t even in the picture (that would add about a billion megawatts of past talent and current brainpower)! As a vice-president, he should be, but he was his usual classy self and stayed away in order to focus the spotlight on the team. He’s right, though – I was immediately looking for Stevie in that picture and was a bit disappointed he wasn’t in it. However, it’s still a fine, FINE picture (said in a mock southern accent, by the way).

I seriously considered purchasing a ticket for today’s parade. I didn’t look at fares, but I did consider it worth the exhaustion and expense to be at the parade today. However, I started feeling guilty about the possible increase to my carbon footprint. I will have to settle, though, for wearing a red tee today and watching the parade online. Tangentially, I was amused to see so much red on the street today – about every fourth person I saw had donned red for today. Far be it from me to suggest that Washingtonians are closet Red Wings fans, but you never know . . .

Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie!

My sister and I spent yesterday exchanging Red Wings/Stanley Cup pictures and discussing about how we were right about Osgood’s level of skill and talent. We then discussed the possibility of Dorkus visiting when the Wings come to DC to meet the president (President Obama, hopefully). While they take the opportunity to talk to a president and greet various DC personalities, we’ll take the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the team.

Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie!

In conclusion:

Ozzie, Ozzie, Ozzie!
