The Wedding Guest Dress of 2008All hail summer sales. Thanks to vigilant monitoring on my part, I have now secured the dress I’d been eyeing for the wedding that IP and I will be attending in August. The wedding is to be held a) in the morning with the reception being 2) outdoors. With some strappy flats, I should be able to endure the cheap showiness of nature without too much trouble and still look good. The dress is decidedly casual for a wedding, but this is a wedding in which jeans are welcome (I have previously mentioned on this blog that if anyone shows up to my wedding in Michigan in jeans, I will kill them dead from the altar). IP has already observed that we will probably be the best dressed, seeing as we’re incurable DC professionals these days. Our dress these days are far cries from our respective grad student days.  Ah, J Crew jeans and shorts, where have you gone?

The primary job of this dress will be to showcase my arms and shoulders, which have come a long way from this flabbiness three years ago. The upper body workout that IP put me on in January 07 has paid dividends. I will have to moderate my strength workouts as I head into the marathon season, but this dress will nicely display all the hard work I’ve put in the past year and a half.

I’m not sure that this dress will be quite the hit that last year’s wedding dress was, but it’s a modest attempt. I had originally been contemplating a Nicole Miller sheath dress, but decided that this would be hard to pull off with the childbearing hips that I have. Perhaps I’ll be able to pop out a chipmunk-cheeked kid quite easily one day, and Nicole Miller sheaths are perhaps a tad bit unforgiving thanks to that fact of life. Last year’s Tocca garnered much attention, though, and I’m known for choosing dresses that are pretty quirky and cool within my circle. This is not my circle, however, so we’ll see how this dress goes over. I suppose I’ll have to find something to cover my shoulders in the Catholic church where the ceremony will be held, but the coordinating sweater for this seems a bit much.
