Another Weekend, Another Race

Well, not really; it’s not like I’ve been racing all these weekends and keeping it from my loyal readership of three. But I did drag my ass downtown to participate in the 21st Annual St. Patrick’s Day 8K on Sudnay. And lo, it was good.

I ran a bit slower because I decided to keep pace with a friend who was also running; we were going to get something to eat afterward, and since I have the worst sense of direction in downtown D.C. (even after all this time living here), I wanted to stay nearby. The good thing is that I felt great throughout the run and have every confidence that I’ll be able to finish the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler with a decent time.

I always get very excited after I’ve raced. I enjoy the adrenaline rush that comes with thousands of other runners joining you for a jog. I tend to have better runs thanks to said adrenaline; having the competition there is a motivator, too, as passing people helps push my pace a bit faster. I do have a competitive streak in me, treadmill competitiveness etiquette complaints notwithstanding; had I been a runner in high school, I probably would’ve done cross country happily.

After the Cherry Blossom run, I’ll probably stick to runs that are 10K in length or less; after the wedding I’ll start looking at half-marathons, hopefully do a couple of those, then work my way back to the marathon one day. One day.

Ah, Pikes Peak Marathon, you will be mine one day . . .
