Define “Defiantly”

Major pet peeve: when someone is trying to write “definitely” and ends up writing “defiantly.” For example:

“I would defiantly make sure this is really what you want in life because . . .”

Why would you defiantly make sure about what you really want in life? I can see wanting to assess some things in a definite manner (definitely!). But to assess things defiantly? Attitude problem!

All joking aside, here’s a way to remember how to spell it: think “define.” Drop the last “e” and add “-itely”. Think of it as “Italy” misspelled. Just remember that there are no “a’s” in the word at all. I’d like to say just add “-ly” to “definite”, but alas, I’ve seen “definate” and “defiant” floating out there in cyberspace masquerading as “definite”. Sigh.

People who write “defiantly” for “definitely” are defiantly loosers.

I can see someone being defiantly loose, actually. ;) Defiantly footloose!

Sorry, sorry, bad, bad joke. They’re remaking it, that’s why it came to mind.

Cut your losses? Lose your feet? You are made of ice cream and banana and chocolate syrup and get a kick out of it, but you should be chased away?

I was quoting the illustrious Kenny Loggins.
