So!
Who am I?
Wouldn’t you like to know?
Kidding. A brief description: a woman in her very early 30s trying to get a leg up on this whole “adulthood” and “life” deal. Professionally, I am the silent yet ever-present safety net in your conference life—I make sure that if you happen to find yourself at a conference in my area (I mean both in Washington, D.C. and field-wise), you’ll be comfortable wherever you go, secure in the knowledge that your garlic allergy will not prevent you from engaging in a stimulating discussion, or that the materials that you sent me at 11pm get printed in time for tomorrow’s meeting (please don’t ask me why I didn’t respond to your email right away—chances are, I was asleep, but I was up way earlier than you were, so they are printed). Personally, I’m a daughter, a sister, a fiancée. I come from two fabulous, hardworking human beings who raised me well and sent me to an academically distinguished university (Go Blue!) and share that parentage with three siblings known as Big Brother A, Dorkus Malorkus and Mathgeek. I am partner (I’m being all PC, right?) to a wonderful man known affectionately as *The* IP (which used to stand for Invisible Postdoc but now could stand for Ingenious Politico or Impossible Person, take your pick) who is taking the plunge and marrying me next year. IP and I are parents to one amazing plush scorpion named Scorpie who will sting you if you try to get nasty with me; Scorpie is quite happy to be moving out of bastard territory, too.
I was born in Mexico. I had the misfortune of growing up in Saline, Michigan, a town so white that it makes vanilla ice cream look exotic. I received my B.A. from the University of Michigan and my M.A. from the University of Toronto. As you can tell, I’m a very North American kind of girl. Yes, my blog is named after Shakespeare’s Sonnet 87 (and you will not find a lengthy analysis of the poem on its own page in the next few days because a) I’m lazy and 2) I don’t want to give a free pass to people at term paper time), and yes, I am telling *The* IP and everyone else in the world to talk to the hand in my profile picture. Where are we in that picture, you ask? Arches National Park in Moab, Utah.
Last but not least, I am a runner. Not necessarily born to do so, but I still love it (when my hamstring isn’t paining me, at least). 2006 saw me finishing the New York City Marathon; 2008 should see me doing the same in New York once again.
